Learn from History

GLOBAL MEDIA - part 1

Almost from the very start, radio signals were broadcast international. Beginning in the mid 1920s, the major European Colonial power – the Netherlands, Great Britain and Germany were using short wave radio to connected with their various colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East as well as, in the case of the British, Canada and the Australia. Short wave was still is well suited for transmission over very long distances because of its high frequency easily and efficiency reflect or skip of the ionosphere producing skyway take travel vast distances.

Anti-government or anti-regime radio also constituted an important segment of international broadcasting. These clandestine stations typically emerged from the darkest shadows of political conflict. Revolutionary groups or intelligent agencies frequently operate them. During Cold War the unauthorized, clandestine opposition station typically operated outside the nation origins to reach their broadcast to avoid discovery, capture, imprisonment or death. Today the relatively few clandestine operation functioning inside the region which they transmit can be classified indigenous station, where else those operating from outside are exogenous station. Another type of broadcast operation transmitting called pirate broadcasters where they illegally operated station broadcasting to British audiences from offshore or foreign facilities.  The pirates were powerful and well subsidized by advertisers and record companies. Mush like the commercial radio stations with which we are now familiar they broadcast 24 hours a day everyday of the year. These pirate offered listeners an alternative to the control and low key programming of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) station. Because the BBC was noncommercial, pirate’ station represented the only opportunity for advertiser who wanted to reach British Consumers.

We call it... knowledge

Do you know? Introduction and conclusion are the most important part of a speech. Your introduction is your first impression, and it sets the audience's view about whether the speech will be interesting, relevant, smart, or opposite. While the conclusion shapes the audience's memory of the speech. The introduction is written after the preparation and writing of the body paragraphs. Completing the body first can help generate original ideas for the introductory paragraph. An introduction is generally about 10 percent of the length of the entire speech, so for a five-minute speech, introduction of about thirty seconds is appropriate.

So, please avoid it to be like this.

Be Brave!!!

Hi all, today, I would like to continue my previous topic. But today, we talk about the technique of how to overcome fear of speaking in public. I believe that many of us, especially government employees ever faced with such problems. Many of us will push each other, if they are required to speak to the crowd although those who have served in the department. It's a bit embarrassing. Am i right?

Okey listen.. proper planning of a speech contributes greatly to speaking with confidence. Self-confidence comes as a natural consequence of thorough preparation. The method and techniques are designed to reduce our anxiety and manage our nervousness. These are communication orientation motivation (COM), Visualization, Systematic desensitization, cognitive restructuring, and public speaking skills training. Public speaking instructors are recommended several specific techniques to novice speaker. The first technique is allowed sufficient time to prepare then practice the speech aloud. The speaker needs to choose an appropriate time to speak and also use positive self-talk. The speaker needs to face the audience with confidence and focus on the message.

The speaker can be more confidence when he or she has developed an effective speech plan. Speech plan is a strategy for achieving your goal. An effective speech plan is the result of a six-step process; the first step is to select a speech goal that is appropriate for the audience and occasion. The second step is to understand your audience and adapt to it. The third step is to gather and evaluate information to use in the speech. The fourth step is to organize and develop ideas into a well-structured speech outline. The fifth step is to choose visual and other presentational aids that are appropriate for the audience. And the sixth step is to practice the speech until delivery is accurate, clear, vivid, appropriate, conversational, and animated.

For the conclusion, whichever way you decide to deliver your speech, this is the way you should practice. Practice to be prepared on facing the fear and apprehension. Practice needed until you have mastered it and feel comfort on it and until you can speak it naturally to self-confidence. Carefully planning and practicing a speech that is worthwhile to your audience will increase your poise so you can speak with confidence and be a more effective public speaker.

What is public relations? Part 2

There are full service public relations firms and those that provide only special services. Public relations firms bill for their services in a number of ways. First, they may be charge an hour rate. Second, charging clients a monthly fee. Third are fixed-fee arrangements, and they may be charge for collateral materials.  Public relations operations come in all sizes. Regardless of size, however, the typical public relations firm or department will have these types of positions such as executive, account executives, creative specialists, and media specialists. Larger public relations operations may also have these positions as need demands such as research, government relations and financial services.

Trust in public relations is essential if the industry is to perform its role for its clients and publics. If people are lied to by public relations, the cultural implications could not be more profound. Customers must make themselves aware of the sources of information and the process by which it is produces. The calls from PR professionals for ethics, accountability, and honesty were the result of a recent series of public embarrassments for the public relations industry. The federal government was making extensive use of video news releases (VNRs) to support a variety of its foreign policy and domestic initiatives. VNRs can be used in their entirety or in part, and the companies that produce them consider even 5-second excerpt aired on a local news show a success. Recognizing video news releases is an increasingly important media literacy skill.

What is public relations? Part 1

Today i will bring you to understand the meaning of public relations. The term “public relations” carries such as negative connotation that most independent companies and company departments now go by the name “public affairs,” “corporate affairs,” or “public communications.” There is no universally accepted definition of public relations because it can be and is many things such as publicity, research, public affairs, media relations, promotion, merchandising, and more. The history of public relations can be divided into four stages. First stage is early public relations, second stage is the propaganda-publicity, third stage is early two-way communication, and fourth stage is advanced two-way communication.

Throughout these four stages in the development of public relations, several factors combined to shape the identity of public relations. They are advances in technology, growth of the middle class, growth of organizations, better research tools, and professionalization. Public relations professionals interact with seven categories of publics, and a public is any group of people with a stake in an organization, issue, or idea: employees, stockholders, communities, media, government, investment community, and customers. Regardless of the way public relations firms bill their clients, they earn their fees by offering all or some of these fourteen interrelated services. They are community relations, counseling, development/fund raising, employee/member relations, financial relations, government affairs, issue management, media relations, marketing communication, minority relations/multicultural affairs, public affairs, special events and public participation and research.

Eat, Pray, Love (Ending)

Today i will continue her intercultural experience in India and Bali.

Looking at the scene in India, The scene shows the clash of cultures that happen between the United States and India. We can see, human communication can increased contact with people who differ identity, knowing culture and technology of other people. For example, India is a poor country and the technology is limited but Liz and Richard get to adapt to the environment, belief, equipment, food and clothing when they were there. The relationship between the two is nicely done although at first they start with a small conflict. There are scenes that Liz and Richard attending an Indian wedding where they wearing Indian traditional cloth, Richard helps Indian men make bread, Richard tells Liz about norm of Indian Women when they drink 'thumbs up’ and so on. At last, she can managed her stress Liz looks easy to adapt to the environment. This may be due to experience, social and related reading material that makes Liz compatible with the culture of India.

Last part in Bali shows Liz exploring fundamental axioms of intercultural communication where she interacts with international and multicultural diversity. Liz adaptation experiences while in Italy and India. In India and Bali, we see the scenario of a belief in artistic expression such as music, sculpture, and painting. Even artistic expression that exists in a country, but it could mean different. Liz is an American who has different belief and cultures, may accept other cultures and faith. Here we see Liz trying to build intercultural skills in interacting with microcultures.

Overall, this director tried to show the cultural diversity of the world community, which may differ with us. Scene in New York, Italy, India and Bali, showing people of different backgrounds can be accepted and adapted to the elements of another culture. When one enters a different culture, a natural anxiety emerges. There are several ways to adapt to the culture and effective communication of other people. First, cope with anxiety upon entering a new culture. As Liz did that start to learn their language. The longer a person lives in a new culture, the more that person culturally tends to become more involved. Then Liz meet new people as we see in the current scene in Italy, India and Bali to build confidence in herself and ultimately learn more about the culture. Liz also dare to try something new like a new language, food, culture, beliefs and customs, dress, and she seems happy with the new culture they have learned.

Eat, Pray, Love (Part 1)

The movie Eat, pray, love is about Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) had everything a modern woman is supposed to dream of having a husband, a house, a successful career like so many others, she found herself lost, confused and searching for what she really wanted in life. Newly divorced and at a crossroads, Gilbert steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life, embarking a journey around the world that becomes a quest for self-discovery. In her travels, she discovers the true pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy, the power of prayer in India, and finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of true love in Bali.
Looking for the concept of intercultural communication, I try to associate with the cultural element in this story. I found the director is trying to bring viewers the story in a familiar culture from three different countries Italy, India and Indonesia. Some of the culture component can be seen in this story including symbols, language, norms, belief, values, and worldview. We can see clearly seen when Liz experienced to adapt with other language, cultural norms of some societies, beliefs and cultural orientation of society. When she was in Italy, she found a man named Luca Spaghetti. He is and an ethnocentrism and he tried to judge about American people culture without truly understanding the meaning and concepts behind that culture. At the same scene, she was taught the way of Italian communications rules where they use hand gesture to express their words and feeling. This is a theory that relationship between culture through cultural variability in communication.

Tomorrow, i will bring you to explore her experience in India and Bali. Don't forget to follow ya!!
